| [20-03-2010 (9:59 am)] | Well, its been a while since I've had any reason or inclination to update this Boring Load Of Garbage, however, last night Amy, Tim and I were taking a trip down what amounts to memory lane. We were examining the Wellington Shoreline from 1840 - basically, Lambton Quay and Wakefield Street. That got us on to how next to no Wellington buildings have significant underground sections - that got us talking about the BNZ Centre and its associated arcades - the Grand Arcade and the Old Bank Arcade. I was trying to remember the name of the arcade that was on the other side - if you imagine a square divided into quarters, with the Grand Arcade, the Old Bank Arcade and the BNZ Centre occuping a quadrent each, the arcade I'm talking about is the one occuping the remaining quadrent. In the "good old days", before the Old Bank Arcade was linked in to that whole complex, this arcade was. And I was trying to remember its name. I knew it had a restaurant, and a NZ Post shop, but I couldn't remember much more about it. It was at ground level, not basement, so you got to it by riding an escalator. I was googling for this arcade, and no matter what I searched for, I got nothing. I even searched for "what was the arcade that used to be linked to the BNZ Centre and the Grand Arcade before the Old Bank Arcade was?" - that yielded no results either. Anyway - the whole point of this rant is to preserve the information that is the name of that arcade - and to wrap it in enough verbiage that anyone else searching the same way I did will be sure to find this page. The arcade was the Colonial Arcade. Funny thing is - despite now knowing its name, there are no relevant results - "Colonial Arcade" Wellington yields pages about Australia. Anyway. Hope you found what you were looking for in this rant. |

| [26-08-2006 (9:36 pm)] | Sam, Amy and I were having a little laugh stalking each other on Google. We found, under my name, a whole pile of posts to the nocat and otrs mailing lists from my time in Computer Link, a whole pile of bollocks about some William Philip Dowie dude, and finally, last, of about 120 entries, was this page. BAF Technologies Limited managed to get some free advertising, with my name included, at thehub.co.nz, and the BAF Contact us page also was up there too. Also, in unrelated news, I apparently am no longer the place to go when one wants to search for Telstra 100MBit internet connections - and that was only some rubbish in Australia anyway. Thus terminates this entry in my Boring Load Of Garbge (blog). |
| [18-04-2006 (12:35 am)] | I did I Google search for rumours about Telstra offering 100MBit Internet connections. You can imagine my surprise when my own web site came up second! So, to all the Telstra customers/fans/etc out there looking for information - you have come to a place that doesn't have the information you require. If I can be bothered, and if I find more out, I might post some info here. If you are lucky. |
| [12-01-2006 (14:15 pm)] | I've completed the upgrade of this page of my site from
HTML 4.01 to XHTML 1.1. I managed to bugger up my SuSE install by
trying to use sources for 10.0 on a 9.3 installation. Don't do it.
It doesn't work, and you break stuff. So, I've installed
Debian-testing at the moment. I don't really like it that much. I've
not yet managed to get my scroll wheel working in emacs, nor the back
and forward buttons on my mouse going in my browser. Still, I'll
tinker a little more and see what I come up with. Telstra managed to fuck up the internet install, as predicted. Initially when I booked the install, I was told that a technician would come out to disconnect the old place, and I would go out there at the same time to uplift all my equipment. Then, we would travel in convoy to the new place, where all my equipment would be installed. So, come 9am on the 12th, I'm waiting in Karori. Turns out there was never going to be the same technician, and so I had totally wasted my time. Now, backing up a little, initially, Telstra were going to move me on the 7th. But, they could only do the disconnection on the 31st, or some time stupidly early like that. Of course, after failing to convince them that they really didn't need to disconnect the old place in order to liven up the new place (Telstra: "Oh, what about the people moving in - if they want Telstra services?" Me: "There are no new people moving in - I'm moving out and my flatmates are remaining, and, not meaning any offence, she works for Telecom - they are not in any hurry to liven up any Telstra servies" Telstra: "But, but, but....") we managed the afore mentioned compromise (I had served notice for the 8th). While on the phone to them on the morning of the 12th, I eventually got put through to their scheduling company's manager, who was astounded at the porkies that I was told. To rectify the problem, he canceled the disconnection, so, what happened was what I wanted to happen in the first bloody place, with the exception of the fact that it had to happen almost a week later, and after much blood, sweat, and tears. If I'm charged a move fee, it will be placed under dispute on the grounds of all this fucking around and the grounds that I had to stay in the old place after my tenancy expired. Every time, without fail now, there has been some hitch up or other to do with a Telstra move. They just simply cannot get it right. |

Many changes since last rant. New Job -
Computer Link
- is just one such change. Back at uni also. First trimester over,
1 exam to go, COMP201 - on Saturday. I had a go at getting a VPN set up - a net to net VPN, not a client to net VPN. It was well - I had at least 2 other networks in on the arrangment. But for some reason, it would never survive a power failure. And on the topic of power failures - I have obtained a UPS. It has 2 outlets. I run far more than 2 devices off it. How? I chopped the femail end off an IEC to IEC power cable, and soldered it in place of a NZ Power cable for a 4 way power board. So I can plug in normal devices. Like Cable modems. Load on the UPS is around 40% - check it out on the MRTG. I also have replaced my 2x 8 port 10/100 switches with a 16 port rack mountable 10/100 switch. Gives me 2 more ports to play with, and full speed between all computers. I recently installed ICQ lite. Its been a while since I have been on ICQ, but I still remember my number and password. But for all of you who want to chat to me, forget it, I don't have the time for chatter - if I did, I'd install MSN messenger - and I'd probably spend all my time moaning about how people have crazy bullshit names that don't make any sense and take ages and ages to type. Regarding my rant of more than a year ago concerning email and spam, I found a method ages ago - spamassassin - it works wonders. It does not catch all, but it does catch quite a bit. I filter a few people's mail at the moment. |
| [21-12-2002 (5:31 pm)] | Most distressing - JNaWK search on google does not turn me up first!! Most upsetting. Here is an attempt: jnawk.net.nz, JNaWK |
| [16-6-2002 (3:44 pm)] | Not a lot of ranting appears to be going on here!! To continue
on from the previous rant, the domain list has gotten huge, almost unmanagable,
so it looks like I need a new method - I have blocked the .kr domain, but
the .com's and the .net's still get in - I don't want to block those, they
are too big a part of the internet. So its some sort of method that wont
require a recompilation of sendmail I am looking for. Getting on to what I intended this rant for: I have set up a VPN server that works - and its behind a firewall. As a result, NetBIOS broke whenever I was on the VPN - simple reason, really, multi-subnetted browsing does not work without a WINS server - so I set one up - how simple. |
| [11-5-2002 (6:08 pm)] | Had a go at implimenting some more effective anti-spam measures - simply firewalling hosts totally did not appear to be working too well, so I have done a little reading, and some testing. Now, if a particular domain is specified as the return path, it will be automatically rejected. |
| [1-5-2002 (12:08 pm)] |
Real long time, no rant. Changed DNS layout slightly - all my http://site.jnawk.net.nz
sites are now http://jnawk.net.nz/site - reason - web server configuration file is easier. Ofcourse,
the same is not true for the MP3 and pub sites - that would just be silly. I have, since the 28th of Feburary, been working at Advanced Portable Technologies as a storeman. That is a lot of fun, and is certanly more rewarding than Countdown. Mayor, as web server has died, (well, PHP has died), so nitro is filling that role, (especially since it has a far more reliable hard disk now). Mayor as router is a situation that no longer happens either - I have obtained an old 486 laptop (dead battery), and 2 Ositech Jack of Diamonds 1414 (14.4K modem and 10MBit Ethernet), and it is now doing routing, and firewalling. The situation where every linux box in the network was a DNS server has also stopped, it was just too much hassle when one machine's DNS died, because I had to SSH in to that machine, and first see what machine it was querying for answers, and then SSH to that machine to find out the status of the name server there, and if it had died, find out why, etc, etc. It was all in all just too much hassle, especially since one server can handle the DNS load I have quite well anyway. Also, have had a go with mod_rewrite and proxying connections through to a behind the scenes server, and also have removed the counter - it will be a pain to move it to the new server, and besides - its unprofessional, which is not the kind of customer my business is looking for. |
| [12-1-2002 (11:50 pm)] | First rant of the new year. Yippiee! Jump for joy. pub.jnawk.net.nz
has been pulled again, people whom I do not know are downloading from it.
Same story as for mp3s, I have just pulled it from the DNS. Aside from that, things are all coming along very nicely. I got a few presents that are very nice - My sister gave me a jade necklace, my parents gave me a laser printer (10PPM, 10MB RAM (which I upgraded to 16MB), 2 paper trays, (100+500 pages) and network), and for my birthday, they gave me a go on the Fly By Wire - real fun! 0 to 106 MPH (159KM/H) in 2 seconds! Ana and I both gave ourselves to each other, and I gave her my old phone (Nokia 3210), and I brought myself a Nokia "blue" 8250. I just yesterday decided to buy myself a Sub. Man that rocks! Ofcourse, parents are not too pleased, deep sounds carry well! Still, no worries. |
| [17-12-2001 (1:31 pm)] | Long time no write. Reason: BAF
Technologies Limited. Things are coming along nicely. Recently, some
computer, obviously running Windows NT or 2K with IIS, located on the same
network as me, got infected by a couple of viruses, and immediately started
trying to propogate itself. That machine was ARPing all day and night, for
god knows what. Not to mention the fact that its home page was riddled with
viruses. Anyway - an email to the help desk brought about a prompt reply,
and what appears to be a stop to the sensless ARPing. mp3s.jnawk.net.nz is no longer running - this is because for the past 3 days, my web server has been doing around 300mb a day - at that rate, I won't make it to the next period!! At any rate, the web server still serves the site, just, no DNS server serves the name. Anyway, I should get on with my other tasks instead of ranting here. |
| [12-11-2001 (1:38 am)] | Cable is back up. Yay. |
| [12-11-2001 (1:12 am)] | It looks like cable has gone down once more. Not good. I wonder
when it will come back again. Yesterday was a very interesting day. There
were a few issues with 2s, and so it at present is running off a 10meg network
card - not good - James' CD Writer can only go at half its usual speed when
burning direct from the network. Still, 6x is an improvment on the 2x I
can use mine at. I guess I will have to go visit Computer link and pick
up another 100meg network card, for 2s. And at some stage, I will be wanting
to upgrade the card from in monkey to a 100meg card. And then, an 8 port
switch will be justified - hell, at present, a 5 port switch and 8 port
hub are just about full. Ofcourse, yesterdays network issues were more entertaining
than just one machine - that machine was a router. Well - not any more.
I have moved back to 1 physical network, with the machines that are not
speed important on the hub. That means 2s, mayor, plap, and speedy are on
switch, and the rest (monkey, storm, inbitza, emptd, spx) are on the hub.
Actually, come to think of it, inbitza does not need a fast network card,
nor does emptd, and those machines will need a hub between them when I take
my switch, so I guess I don't really need to buy any more network cards.
Especially as mitch01 will not be needing a network card when Richard moves
out. At any rate, I drift off topic - by moving back to one physical network
aagain, most of the machines have new IP addresses (namely all the machines
tthat are not usually present, and 2s). Network issues aside, spx has power
supply issues (well, I beleive it is power supply issues. I am yet to test
it with another power supply (namely the one from speedy, I will have to
get James' permission, no doubt), so I will be testing that at some stage
in the future. Completely off the topic of computers, I need to study for my pending stats exam on Thursday, however, after that, I am totally free until I am no longer free (be that I choose to return to Uni, or I get a full time job, or BAF Online turns out to be a success). |
| [10-11-2001 (1:26 am)] | At the time of writing this, I am 3 hits off 2000! Will be a milestone! And while I get the chance, I will include a link to the business I and 2 friends are starting up - BAF Online - web and email hosting (plus other functions like DNS) http://www.bafonline.net.nz |
| [3-11-2001 (9:26 pm)] | Still no rants for a while. I have been busy. Setting up servers left right and centre. One of the servers has a hard disk that has been giving us grief. Turns out, its not its hard disk giving us grief, its this machines internet connection (56K modem) causing all the hassles. |
| [17-10-2001 (3:00 pm)] | Long time no rant. Real long time no rant! Finally got around
to doing so. In the mean time, what has been happening? Well, a few things
are happening. I have final exams for the year soon. I must get around to
writing a CV for some better jobs. Also, web hosting looks like it might
be a promising buisness plan to make a little money. The plan is to move
out at some stage, with like minded people, and get a Citylink connection
to the internet - research is being done at present, so I am not yet sure
if that will be a 10mbit or 100mbit connection, but either way, it will
rock! As for the strikeout up the top there, well, I put that blurb in when I went over my traffic, on the 1GB plan, and have since upgraded/downgraded to the 5GB plan. I am now struggling to use all my traffic. If, however, I find that my traffic is being used all up, then I will pull those sites again. Anyhow, I will be off to do more important things like writing software for a web based interface to my DNS system, and finding web interfaces for my mail system. |
| [11-09-2001 (2:24 pm)] | Well, I really have not written anything anywhere for a while or so - I have been too busy with other issues - work is one such issue - I did a few shifts last week - I need the money. Another such issue is that I have taken on admin duties on Neil's server - tasks like VPN stuff, etc. I will install a MRTG on his machine at some stage, and I will have to set up a hidden website or so. |
